What do you dose?

Currently on my big tank, I’m just doing the following: Alk/Ca: CaRx and kalk Trace elements: TM A-/K+ NO3: none, sulfur denitrator PO4: BW Phosphat-E Aminos: AcroPower (not sure if it’s doing anything tbh) I’m curious to hear what you guys dose for maximum growth and color?

Using TM A, B, C and A-, K+ for my tank at the moment. Considering going back to AFR, easier and felt like I had better growth.

Pretty cool - I might switch from BRS 2-part to AFR on my mushroom tank one of these days. You’re ok doing both AFR and TM A/K? Btw: I’ve heard that if you over feed or buy more fish, you might save $$ on BW Neo stuff to bring up nutrients? 😇

AFR is simplier right, just one doser vs doing all the crazy stuff manually. However, I don’t think that it’s economically feasible for tanks over 60gal right?

Oh man, are you asking me to geek out right now with numbers, because i will? If you are, I'll make some assumptions and throw it into excel and run the numbers. I ended up switching just because I didn't have the "perfect" tank using each part equally. So I was having to supplement afr with part b for alk.

We haven’t had any issues as of yet….this system has been up and running since January. We are toying with putting the CaRx online. It will happen in the next few months…. We have 17 fish in the tank as it stands now. 5 of which are small tangs. I feed 2 frozen brine cubes, a ton of pellets, and nori daily. Can’t seem to keep the nutrients detectable.

With an exception of my mushroom tank, all other tanks run a CaRx for alk stability and cost effectiveness. I would not trust a needle valve to handle the effluent rate though. Kamoer is your friend! Interesting on your nutrient levels - you’ve built quite an effective mechanical/biological filtration system!

Thanks! We have the old ATB 850 skimmer from our old 135gal tank, and a couple of the mesh socks. We’ve only cleaned the socks once on the tank, and have only done maybe 3 small water changes since we started the tank.

Many of us suffer from high nutrients so perhaps if you can start a build thread to document your setup, that would be appreciated. 😀

Speaking of AFR - you’ve found this to improve coloration at all? I haven’t used it in years so wondering if it’s worth it.

I use AFR... Micro adjust with ESV two part (it also has trace in it.) and then on top of that add TM A&K per ICP tests... SPS heavy. Yeah, water changes 10-20% a weekish...

This is across your six tanks or just the SPS tank? Also, why not go with moonshiner since you’ve gone this far? You’ve seen decent color / PE differences with AFR?

Colors have improved, but I wasn’t sure what to attribute it to…the AFR, or things just finally settling in and becoming happy.

@BackbayReef so I had to do it just so I knew. Looks like afr might actually be a cheaper option if it was a straight up afr vs balling + trace, no additional supplements to the afr. Their site says afr includes trace, but if you add those with it then yes it would skyrocket the cost. I'm coming up with $0.27/day afr and $0.34/day balling. My math could be screwed up as it's early and I haven't had coffee yet.
