About a month ago I was looking for something to do and picked up this old gun stock that had been sitting in my pile of stocks and decided to clean it up. Turns out it was manufactured in the CZ BRNO factory 1935 and had been captured and “germinized” in 1940. It seems that at some point after that, it had been nit by a car which caused a the visible damage. I suspect the barrel and receiver were bent and discarded at the time Well, right about the exact time I pulled that stock off the pile, this VZ 24 was listed on gunbroker and it’s pretty much an exact match for the stock I’m working on. It’s a pretty rare combination of VZ 24 parts which were produced intra-war and then adapted for German military use (the VZ-24 is Mauser 98 variant that is functionally identical to the K98k with only minor changes required to meet 1940’s German military doctrine) The bidding on that sporterized rifle was fierce but I got it. Finding a sporterized VZ-24 without being drilled for a scope mount or the barrel cut is not an every day occurrence. The fact that this one had been built a very short time earlier is quite the match. I’m going to leave the dent in the stock by the wrist but I need to re-construct the front of the stock. Fortunatly. The damage occurred in such a manner that all the splicing will be concealed by the nose metal.
