It is always a good day when a group of fellow hobbyists can get together and just chat and chill. I'm happy to host West Coast Reefers BBQ one weekend as soon as the weather drops to a comfortable setting. Dave B

  • First Post in Fish !!! - Captive Bred Biota Angels

.... Continuing last post about plans for the baby angels: 2) Palaun Coral Beauty - This was a freebie, wouldn't have ordered it, but never say no to a gift. 3) Goldflakes - We have a pair of Captive Bred Goldflakes in the 750g that we have grown out and are now spawning. This pair will be a 'spare', but more importantly the Goldflake sparkle outdoors in the sun. So this pair is destined to live in the frag tanks. 4) Navarchus - The dream is to grow a Navarchus from 100% Juvenile to adult and have a well behaved reef fish. I think a mature Navarchus is one of the most beautiful fish there is. 5) Asfur - The Asfur is a purchase for just beauty. If you have never seen an Adult Asfur in the sunlight, you have never seen the beauty of an Asfur angel. Growing one from Juvie to adult in sunlight is a bucket list goal. I have no desire to move that one inside. And outside in the frag tanks it will be a long time before she can do any harm. 6) The Misbar Regal - I love yellow belly regals. We had a pair before our last fish disaster. We have a yellow belly in the 750g now, really want to grow one of these Crazy priced 'Grade A Mis-bar' and see what the adult pattern looks like. Dave B

    > @Ndrwater wrote: > Be interesting to see how the captive bred angels will do in a reef. Will species typically known to be coral eaters not be? @o2manyfish you may be the Guinea pig for several of these species. > I kept an Asfur in my sps reef for years with no issues.... Until the reboot... Then things changed ... > Definitely a thread to follow... I'm curious to see as well. I had a wild Navarchus that was reef safe, but I never trusted it in the main reef, until we had a wipe out and moved her inside just to have some fish and she was super well behaved. That fish was hand caught by a friend in Bali and arrived to me with most of it Juvenile stripes. So it grew out in the outdoor frag tank and i had no issues with it. The Imperator in our 750 now went between frag tank and display several times. She just decimates elegance corals, and destroys zoa colonies - She doesn't eat the zoas just pulls them off the rock to hunt for sponge. Right now with the collection of baby angels the plan is: 1) Colini Angels - This is my unicorn fish. They are impossible to keep alive in captivity. Do a search and you will find the only person with published long term success is Tanne Hoffe in the Netherlands. My record is 6 months with a wild caught Colini - in an outdoor pond that was so dense with plankton it looked like a swamp and you could only see the fish (angels) when they broke the surface for food. These Colini's are at 4.5 months outside and the goal is to have a harem.

    > @BackbayReef wrote: > Wow - amazing @o2manyfish โ€” you got a lot more room now that the giant Emperor left his 750gal palace? ๐Ÿซข Ironically, right after we finished shooting that video Andrew texted that they were bleaching their QT systems and wouldn't be ready for fish for a few weeks. We made that great catch the fish video and then as soon as we stopped the video Andrew texted, my wife and I laughed and then we opened the door to the trap and let the barking queen swim away. > @ktran wrote: > That's awesome, I think for the price they may be worth it coming from clean systems. Are you QTing them when they come in or straight to your main systems? @Ktran - I don't have a QT setup. I'm very selective in picking my fish. I don't buy from fish stores. I run ozone and UV. At this point most of the fish I choose are pretty sensitive or what as labelled as 'Expert'. Most of these fish, In my experience, don't have high success rates going thru QT. Many of these fish, again in my opinion, need to be able to eat when they want and what they want. A QT doesn't have that - Putting them into a well established and mature reef system with the myriad of things to eat - gives them a much higher chance of success than any other medication out there. Well fed fish can fight off and heal alot of things. Dave B
